Half Day / Whole World helps students learn about diverse cultures by engaging them in unique, hands-on, activity- and food-based multi-cultural experiences. It is a 3-4 hour program of scheduled activities for middle school students on days when Rhinebeck’s middle school has early dismissal. The afternoon includes lunch and a variety of chaperoned activities.
HD/WW activities increase the cultural competence of participating students by introducing them to different cultures in a respectful and celebratory environment. Often, members of our local community with origins in the culture being presented actively participate, giving students a first person perspective on a different culture. These interactions with representatives of other cultures help humanize difference and diversity, and allow students a unique opportunity to become more comfortable talking about and honoring these differences. The HD/WW program began in 2011. Each HD/WW is different. Past programs have included:
The food, culture and Bollywood dancing of India and Nepal
The food culture and martial arts of Brazil
Culture and food of Madagascar including music and soccer
Ballet, collage and food of France
Celebration of Dutch traditions with food, architectural tour and Sinterklaas workshop
HD/WW is open to all students in grades 6 through 8 who live in the Rhinebeck Central School District. The bulk of the students come from Bulkeley Middle School, but participants have included home-schooled students and youth from the Astor Learning Center in Rhinebeck.
